The Nissan Skyline is more than just a car—it’s a cultural symbol. Known for its dominance in the JDM world and its massive influence on car culture globally, the Skyline has built a reputation for pushing boundaries in both performance and design. But while the GT-R versions steal most of the spotlight, there's a lesser-known sibling that deserves just as much attention: the 1994 Nissan Skyline R33 GTST Type M.


Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to photograph one of the cleanest examples of this model for MyCarPub.com, and the results speak for themselves. The car is a bridge between generations, offering raw turbocharged power with understated elegance—and for a photographer, that’s gold.

The Forgotten Sibling of the GT-R: What Makes the R33 GTST Type M Special


While the R33 GT-R gets most of the attention thanks to its all-wheel-drive system and twin-turbo RB26, the GTST Type M offers something different—a rear-wheel-drive setup paired with the RB25DET, a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing around 250 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. It's lighter, more agile, and just as tunable. Many enthusiasts actually prefer it for drift builds or as a daily driver due to its simpler drivetrain and lower maintenance needs.


This car was Nissan’s answer to enthusiasts who wanted GT-R DNA without the price tag or complexity. The R33 GTST Type M came with 5-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential (optional), and four-wheel disc brakes, making it more than capable on both street and track. It also offered some premium touches like digital climate control, upgraded seats, and the Type M-specific aero package—which includes unique side skirts, rear spats, and a subtle front lip.

Shooting the Skyline: Behind the Lens


Shooting this car was an experience in itself. Capturing it wasn’t just about finding a clean background—it was about letting the lines, shadows, and stance do the talking. We shot in an industrial part of town just before sunset. The light hit perfectly, highlighting the deep gunmetal finish and giving the car a moody, aggressive edge. From the aggressive stance to the subtle 90s curves, the R33 is full of contrast—equal parts nostalgic and futuristic. I chose a mixed urban and industrial backdrop to highlight the car’s dual nature: raw performance and sleek design.


Every angle told a different story. The Type M aero, the OEM wheels, and the Nismo touches felt less like accessories and more like a declaration of purpose. When editing, I preserved the natural shadows and pops of highlight to keep it honest to the car’s vibe—clean, serious, and street-ready.

If you're into JDM culture, this car is a unicorn. With U.S. import laws now opening the gates for the R33, we’re seeing more pop up at shows, auctions, and social feeds—but few this clean.
